Benefits of Massage Therapy
Massage therapy, in my opinion, should be a part of every person’s wellness plan. The general benefits of massage make it worthwhile to everyone.
The most popular reason people want to get a massage is for general relaxation. Who doesn’t want to be relaxed after a busy day?
One of the most important benefits is the increase in blood flow for the client, when you have a sore or tight muscle, which is actually hindering the flow of blood through the muscle, which is in turn making it very uncomfortable.
My goal through the massage is not only to relax that muscle so it is no longer causing the pain, but to also separate the muscle fibers enough to let that blood flow freely.
When you think about a tight muscle or a knot in a muscle, imagine what the back of duct tape looks like. The fibers on the back of duct tape are similar to that of the fibers in a muscle; the only difference is the muscle fibers generally run parallel to each other (skeletal muscles) or in a circular pattern like that of a tree stump (these are generally the visceral or internal muscles).
When a muscle becomes tight or knotted, those fibers have moved closer to each other causing them to feel tight and restricting the movement of that particular muscle as well as restricting the blood flow through the muscle. Freeing up the space in the muscle for the blood to flow is going to help you overall feel better and take away some of the pain you may be experiencing.
Some of the other ailments massage can help with, which are just as important include, anxiety, digestive disorders, headaches, nerve pain, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, etc.
Massage is the one medical treatment that is looked at more as a luxury than a necessity, which is something I would like to help my patients understand better. It is not only beneficial, but also necessary for everyone to include a massage in their month-to-month activities and I hope to portray this to many new and existing patients.
